Mwanza City was established in 1892 as an Administrative and Commercial Center to control production, especially in the cotton fields of the Lake Victoria region. In 1978, Mwanza was granted the status of a Municipality in accordance with the Local Government Structure established in 1972. In 2000, Mwanza was further developed to the status of a City.
This is the second city after Dar es Salaam.
The city of Mwanza is located on the southern shores of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania.
The total area is 256.45km2 of which 184.90km2 (2/3 of the total area) is dry land and the remaining area is covered by water.
Of the dry land area, which has an area of ​​​​184,900 square kilometers, approximately 94% is urban while the remaining areas consist of forested land, cultivated valleys, grasslands and degraded mountainous areas.

The city of Mwanza sits at an altitude of 1,140 meters above sea level.
It has temperatures between 25.7oC and 30.2oC in the summer and 15.4oC and 18.6oC in the winter months.

According to the 2012 National Census, the population of the city was 363,452 (177,812 males and 185,640 females). The 2016 population is estimated to be 459,565.
The population of Mwanza city is around 800,000 people during the day. This is due to the movement from neighboring towns and villages who enter for small businesses and other various economic activities.

The development of Mwanza city must come from the people with the ultimate goal of creating wealth and sharing it equitably within the community. By achieving this, the city ensures good governance and the rule of law by creating equal opportunities for all residents to achieve their goals.
Responsibilities.
Mwanza City aims to build the capacity of its citizens/residents by providing services that meet the needs of women, men and children by using existing resources, taking into account environmental issues and developing good leadership through community participation.
The Mwanza City Council invites qualified Tanzanians to apply for six (06) job positions in this Council after obtaining approval from the President’s Office, Public Service Management and Good Governance.
