The Prime Minister’s Office – Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities (PMO-LYED) can be traced back from the time when our country got independence in 1961.

From 1961 to 1962 the Ministry was known as Ministry of Labour and Healthy; Ministry of Communication (1962 to 1968), Ministry of Communication, Transport and Labour (1968 to 1972); Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (1972 to 1984); Ministry of Labour and Manpower Development (1985 to 1988); Ministry of Labour Culture and Social Welfare (1989 to 1990); Ministry of Labour, Youth Development and Sports (1990 to 2006); Ministry of Labour, Employment and Youth Development (2006 to 2010); Ministry of Labour and Employment (2010 to 2015) and Prime Minister’s Office – Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities (PMO-LYED) (2015 to date). Notwithstanding of all these changes Labour remains the core concern.

The Government through the Prime Minister’s Office – Labor, Employment and Relations has announced 5,746 youth to join apprenticeship training which will enable them to gain practical skills that will help them fully participate in economic activities through self-employment and employing their peers.

This was stated by the Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office – Labor, Employment and Relations Hon. Deus Clement Sangu during a Press Conference held today, January 16, 2026, in Dodoma City aimed at describing the youth selected to participate in Apprenticeship training for the year 2025/2026.

In addition, he said that the training is funded by the Government at 100 percent.

Hon. Sangu said, the vocational training will be provided in 47 colleges in the country through the fields of fashion design and tailoring, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, welding and metal joining, painting and lettering, cooking, manufacturing of mechanical parts, automotive and mechanical engineering, domestic and industrial electricity, automotive electricity, hotel and tourism services, mining and metalworking.

“These fields are very important for our youth, as they will enable them to acquire skills that will enable them to be employed or self-employed,” he said

He also said that, the Government led by Hon. President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has continued to set strategies and implement various interventions that will enable them to have a prosperous society and build a skilled workforce that will enable them to compete in the job market locally and abroad.

He said, these interventions include the implementation of the National Skills Development Program through Apprenticeships which aims to strengthen the national workforce to compete in the local and international labor market by acquiring skills that are in line with the needs of the labor market and ultimately be able to be employed or self-employed.

Likewise, Minister Sangu has called on the colleges that have been awarded the training, to cooperate with the selected youth, teach them and supervise them well throughout their training period.

He has also called on the selected youth to study hard, be disciplined and follow the rules and regulations of the colleges.

The selected youth are required to report to the colleges for registration and start training from January 19, 2026.

The training to be provided is full-time.
