Position: Sustainability Specialist | Ports & Terminals
Job Description
Experienced and results-driven Specialist focusing on Environmental and Sustainability Programs responsible for driving, managing, and monitoring site-level environmental management systems, operational sustainability programs, and compliance frameworks across DP World Dar es Salaam Terminal. Direct reporting to Sustainability Manager and functionally reporting to Head of HSE Executive. This role ensures full alignment with local Tanzanian environmental legislation (NEMC/EMA), international standards (ISO 14001, IFC PS), and DP World Ports and Terminals (P & T) global sustainability strategies. Additionally, the incumbent serves as a key sustainability subject- matter expert supporting cross-departmental Environmental Sustainability programs, HSE reporting, People and Culture initiatives and community sustainability projects.
Key performance areas:
Regulatory Compliance and Auditing:
- Strong knowledge of local, regional, and international environmental regulations (NEMC, EMA, IMO, IFC PS6, ISO 14001). Leads and supports internal and third-party audits, ensuring corrective actions (CAPA) are implemented effectively.
Environmental Risk Assessment and Impact Analysis:
- Skilled in conducting comprehensive environmental risk assessments, identifying and evaluating potential impacts of port operations (e.g., dredging, cargo handling, bunkering, and vessel emissions) on air, water, marine ecosystems, and soil quality.
Hazardous Waste Handling and Materials Management (IMDG/HAZMAT):
- Ensuring proper identification, storage, labelling, safe handling, and disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with IMDG Code and local environmental regulations. Ensures proper documentation and segregation in line with pollution prevention strategies.
Sustainability and Resource Efficiency Programs:
- Leads initiatives to reduce terminal environmental footprint in alignment with DP World P & T strategies, including waste reduction, energy/water conservation, circular economy pathways, and carbon emission tracking (GHG Protocol).
People and Culture Sustainability Integration:
- Serves as a core panel member and technical lead for People Department sustainability initiatives, employee engagement campaigns, and community ESG projects.
Permit to Work (PTW) and Operational Oversight:
- Supports and enforces environmental controls through the Permit to Work system for high-risk activities such as fueling, hot work, and confined space entry near sensitive environmental zones.
Emergency Preparedness and Spill Response:
- Trained in developing and executing spill response plans for hazardous material leaks or marine pollution incidents. Oversee availability and condition of spill kits and leads emergency drills and simulations.
Environmental Monitoring and Systems (ISO 14001 EMS):
- Capable of managing continuous monitoring programs for key environmental parameters such as air emissions, marine water quality, wastewater discharge, and noise levels. Maintains documentation, aspect- impact registers, and procedures under ISO 14001.
Stakeholder and Regulatory Liaison:
- Acts as the point of contact with local environmental regulators, NGOs, and inspection authorities. Prepares and presents environmental data, supports permitting processes, and responds to inquiries or inspections.
Environmental Training and Awareness Campaigns:
- Designs and delivers training for operational staff, contractors, and visitors on environmental policies, site-specific risks, spill response, and good practices. Promotes a proactive safety and sustainability culture.
Contractor and Vendor Compliance:
- Ensures third-party contractors adhere to DP World environmental standards, permit conditions, and operational best practices during terminal activities.
Regional Reporting and Shared Learnings:
- Prepares technical updates and presents site environmental performance, waste management metrics, and shared learnings during weekly P and T Regional Efficiency meetings.
Qualifications required:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental Sustainability Management, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline while master’s degree is added advantage.
Skills and experience required:
- 2 to 4 years of experience in environmental management, ESG reporting, sustainability consulting, or operational HSE within port, maritime, logistics, or industrial settings.
- Certified EMS ISO 14001 / NEBOSH Environmental Certificate or LEED Green Associate accreditation is highly desirable.
- Full knowledge of local Tanzanian Environmental Legislation (NEMC/EMA), IFC Performance Standards, and World Bank ESS frameworks.
- Technical proficiency in GHG Protocol modeling, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), waste management audit frameworks, and environmental sampling.
- Full knowledge with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and reporting dashboards for performance tracking.
- Excellence in English and Swahili with strong executive presentation and communication skills.
- Strong leadership capabilities including the ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive sustainability culture.
