Scholarship Opportunity at University of Dodoma 2026, Economic Transformation in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mines through Innovative Techniques for the Recovery of Remnant Gold and Valuable By-Products from Gold Tailings in Tanzania and Zimbabwe Call for PhD Scholarship Application One (1) PhD scholarship is available for the Project titled “Economic Transformation in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mines through Innovative Techniques for the Recovery of Remnant Gold and Valuable By-Products from Gold Tailings in
Tanzania and Zimbabwe”
Overview
Economic Transformation in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mines through Innovative Techniques for the Recovery of Remnant Gold and Valuable By-Products from Gold Tailings in Tanzania and Zimbabwe is a collaborative research project that brings together researchers from the University of Dodoma, Midlands State University, and the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Zimbabwe. The project is funded by the Research Council of Zimbabwe (RCZ) and the Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH)
Gold mining activities play crucial role in economic growth of Tanzania and Zimbabwe, by providing livelihoods and contributing substantially to local incomes.
Gold production often yields substantial amounts of gold tailings that contain significant concentrations of strategic metals such as silver, copper, antimony, iron, zinc, lead, nickel, lithium, and other related minerals. Currently, ASM does not recover these by-products, leading to significant economic losses and environmental pollution, so there is a great need to recover these metals in ASM to transform their economies as well as to remedy the environment.
This project aims to address the economic viability of gold tailings by investigating the processes and technologies for more efficient recovery of remnant gold and valuable by-products.
By focusing on artisanal, and small-scale miners (ASM) sites in different mining regions in Tanzania and Zimbabwe, the researchers will explore the economic benefits of improved, environmentally sustainable methods for the recovery of remnant gold and by-product metals from gold tailings.
Ultimately, this initiative would seek to foster a transition towards more sustainable and economically viable ASM practices, contributing to broader economic development in the region.
