The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in collaboration with Imperial College London (ICL) have received funding from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to implement a project entitledm “Leveraging Antenatal-Based Surveillance for Malaria” (ANC Malaria Surveillance Project).

The project’s broad objective is to develop an integrated, in-country pipeline for translating Antenatal Care (ANC) data into decision-support tools for real-time malaria surveillance and burden reduction in Tanzania

Postdoc positions and research areas

This project intends to recruit and support a one-year postdoctoral training scholarship with a possible extension of one year.

The successful applicant is expected to carry out studies in the modelling of antenatal malaria cases.

The selected Fellow will be enrolled at UDSM according to its guidelines for postdoctoral training.

The candidate will be evaluated accordingly based on timely meeting the research deliverables of the project and demonstrated attainment of measurable personal development and scholarly growth.

The Fellow will be expected to publish a minimum of two (2) original research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, develop research project proposals; provide mentorship to at least two junior researchers; participate in teaching at least one course; contribute to mentoring of the PhD students; and dissemination of results through the presentation in seminars, symposia, and at least two international conferences.

The successful applicant will receive a postdoctoral stipend and research funds to conduct his/her study.

Support for staying abroad as a visiting scholar, as well as travel and lodging costs for conferences will also be provided

Eligibility

A basic eligibility requirement is the possession of a PhD or be in the final stages of their PhD program in Data Science with background in modelling from an institution recognized by the Tanzania Commission for Universities at the time of application.

Additional eligibility criteria:

Demonstrated fluency in both spoken and written English

Demonstrated excellent scientific writing skills.

Prior research or practice experience in any of the above-listed thematic focus areas is preferred

Prior knowledge in programming languages (e.g python, R, SAS, STATA, …)

Prior experience in developing and integrating an Earlier Warning System on DHIS2 platform.

Applicants must have completed their PhD degree within the last five years or be in the final year of their PhD program. Candidates who are still in the process of completing their PhD must have either successfully passed the VIVA VOCE examination or made appropriate arrangements for its completion
