The University of Dar es Salaam is the oldest and biggest public university in Tanzania. It is situated on the western side of the city of Dar es Salaam, occupying 1,625 acres on the observation hill, 13 kilometres from the city centre. It was established on 25th October, 1961.
The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) became a college under the University of London. The college started with a single faculty, The Faculty of Law.
The college was relocated from a single building at Lumumba Street, Dar es Salaam to Mwalimu Nyerere Mlimani Campus.
University of Dar es Salaam was established as a full-fledged University hence the University of East Africa was dissolved.
By 1996, UDSM had grown into an all-round University, offering all the major traditional University disciplines, including Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences, Medicine, Agriculture, Commerce and Management, Engineering, Lands and Architectural Studies.
UDSM established two constituent colleges of education: Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) and Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE).
