Minimum Entry Qualifications for Health-Related programmes 2026/2027, The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) is a government agency which was established on the 1st July 2005, under the Universities Act, Cap. 346 R.E 2023 with a legal mandate to recognise, register and accredit universities in Tanzania.

It also regulates local or foreign university-level programmes, coordinates the proper functioning of universities and ensures a harmonised higher education system in the country.

Entry schemes and pathways into Bachelor’s degree programmes

Two major entry schemes to Bachelor’s degree programmes are recognised by the Commission:

i) The direct entry qualifications, with the following pathways:

  • a) Holders of Form Six Qualifications; and
  • b) Holders of Foreign Secondary Education Certificates;

ii) The equivalent entry qualifications, with the following pathways:

  • a) Holders of Ordinary Diploma or Equivalent Qualifications;
  • b) Holders of Foundation Certificate granted by the Open University of Tanzania (OUT); and
  • c) Holders of a Bachelor’s degree award.

Harmonised Minimum Entry Qualifications for Health-Related programmes 2026/2027 (For Holders of Secondary School Qualifications)

1. Doctor of Medicine (MD/MBBS)

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum of 6 points. An applicant must have at least a “D” grade in Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

2. Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum of 6 points. An applicant must have at least a “D” grade in Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

3. Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm)

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum of 6 points. An applicant must have at least “C” grade in Chemistry and at least “D” grade in Biology and “E” grade in Physics. 5. Bachelor of Science in

4. Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLS)

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum of 6 points. An applicant must have at least “C” grade in Chemistry and at least “D” grade in Biology and “E” grade in Physics. 5. Bachelor of Science in

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum of 6 points. An applicant must have at least “C” grade in Chemistry and at least “D” grade in Biology and “E” grade in Physics. 5. Bachelor of Science in

7. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)

Three principal passes in Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition with a minimum of 6 points.

An applicant must have at least a “C” grade in Chemistry and at least a “D” grade in Biology and “E” grade in Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition.

8. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health Sciences (BSc EHS)

Three principal passes in Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition or Geography or Agriculture with a minimum of 6 points.

An applicant must have at least a “C” grade in Chemistry and at least a “D” grade in Biology and “E” grade in Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition or Geography or Agriculture.

9. Bachelor of Sciences in Health Laboratory (BSHL)

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum entry of 6 points. An applicant must have at least a “C” grade in Chemistry and at least a “D” grade in Biology and an “E” grade in Physics.

10. Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (BSP)

Three principal passes in Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a minimum entry of 6 points. An applicant must have at least a “C” grade in Chemistry and at least a “D” grade in Biology and an “E” grade in Physics.

11. Bachelor of Science in Optometry (BSO)

Three principal passes in Physics, Biology and Chemistry or Advanced Mathematics with a minimum entry of 6 points.

An applicant must have at least a “C” grade in Physics and at least a “D” grade in Biology and “E” grade in
Chemistry/Advanced Mathematics.

12. Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics (BSCND)

Three principal passes in Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition or Geography or Agriculture with a minimum of 6 points. An applicant must have at least a “C” grade in Chemistry or Nutrition

13. Bachelor of Science or Agriculture or Biology. in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics (BSFND)

Three principal passes in Chemistry, Biology and either Physics or Advanced Mathematics or Nutrition or Geography or Agriculture with a minimum of 6 points. An applicant must have at least a “C” grade in Chemistry or Nutrition

Minimum Entry Qualifications for Health-Related programmes Ordinary Diploma or Equivalent Qualifications 2026/2027

1. All Health-Related programmes

All equivalent applicants must have an appropriate Diploma or Advanced Diploma with an average of
‘’B’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition, an applicant must have at least five (5) passes in any non-religious subject at O-Level.

2. Bachelor of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics; and Bachelor of Science in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics

Diploma in Clinical Medicine, Agriculture, Nutrition, Environmental Health, Nursing or Midwifery with an average of ‘’B+’’ or a minimum GPA of 3.5. In addition, an applicant must have at least five (5) passes in any non-religious subject at O-Level.
